Introduced to the classic violin at the age of 7, Phillipe Brault is on a constant quest to find the largest possible instrument, until, at age 12, he settles for the stand-up bass. As a teen, he substitutes his need for size for that of volume and parallel with his studies in classical music, he starts playing the electric bass in the rock group Mes voisins n’en peuvent plus.
He then very successfully commences studies at Cegep Saint-Laurent and begins working with Tomas Jensen in 1999. He will record 4 albums with him as bass player and arranger, performing in shows all over Quebec. He joins Pierre Lapointe’s group in 2004, assuming the role of arranger, bass player and musical director.
Beginning in 2004, his collaborations multiply as an arranger (Fanfare Pourpour, Salut JOE!, Alexandre Belliard), producer (Bruno Marcil, Ivy, Emi, Pierre Lapointe) and bass player (Philippe B, Ligue d’Improvisation Musicale de Montréal). He has also composed music for many theatre productions.
In 2006, Phillipe Brault received a felix for best musical arrangements for Pierre Lapointe’s album La foret des mal-aimes. The album has since been certified Platinum.
